This
view illustrates why Churchill Downs was originally known officially as
the "Louisville Jockey Club and Driving Park Association." Besides races, the grounds were also meant as a place for carriages and
picnics. Here in the present-day infield is what appears to be a Victorian Tail-gate
party.
Early
on, you could find a number of events at the Downs, including auto racing, balloon ascensions, air shows, concerts and steeplechases, as
well as one occasion when the state fair was held here, the main attraction
being the collision of two locomotives.
